Ella's teacher is amazing. We love Mrs. Anderson. She has been teaching for 40 years and is retiring this year. She will be missed by many people. Claire tells Ella all the time that when she is six, she will go to school with Mrs. Anderson. Ella tells her she won't be and then Claire gets mad, and then they fight and it ends with me yelling at them "it's only 7am, if you don't stop fighting, you are going back to your room, so knock it off!" I digress...sorry...
The party was a surprise and it was amazing that it stayed a surprise. Emails were sent to the entire school: staff and parents. We collected money for a presents, we got cakes from costco, invited the community to wish her well and write on our farewell board after school, and we celebrated as a class from 3 to 4pm. The principle got her out of the classroom and a couple mom's got the kids, and took them to the media center. We waited for Mrs Anderson to come down to the media center, after she had been called by the librarian. She came down and peeked in the window and was slightly confused. We waved her in and all us Mom's and the whole class yelled surprise! She was so shocked. It was great to see her face.
We showered her with presents: she got a snapfish photo album of pictures from the whole year, a Pandora charm that said "good luck" for her bracelet (yes, us ladies notice these things on other women!) and the best gift that really got us all crying was the scrapbook that was made by all the kids in the class as well as the entire school. We had the teachers pass out a little note that said "my favorite kindergarten memory of Mrs Anderson was..." and they all filled in the blank and drew pictures. Many parents filled it out, and included photos. It really turned out amazing. She was so touched and you could tell she was really looking forward to sitting down and reading it.
There was a small scare when on Monday an email got sent to Mrs. Anderson that said the timeline of how/when the principle was going to get her out of the classroom, when the kids were getting taken down to the media center, etc....it would have blown the whole thing. When I found out, I was on my way up to the school anyway to volunteer in the classroom. So I told Mrs A that she got an email by accident and I was wondering if I could delete it before she read it. Whew, she hadn't read it and we went over to her computer and deleted it. She had no idea. She told me later that she thought it had something to do with a present or something, and it didn't really phase her. So she had no clue and was truly surprised. Obviously, no one told their kids what was happening. I didn't tell Ella at all, she didn't even know she would see me at the school today. She would have spilled the beans for sure.
